Global OTEC, a UK-based leader in ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), has partnered with Brazil’s prestigious Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa de Engenharia (COPPE/UFRJ) to accelerate the development of floating OTEC technology. This two-year partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), seeks to harness Brazil’s rich ocean resources for clean baseload power generation.

By combining Global OTEC’s floating platform innovations with COPPE/UFRJ’s expertise in marine renewable energy research, this collaboration strengthens Brazil’s position in the global renewable energy landscape. The partnership also aligns with Global OTEC’s commitment to the Brazilian market, demonstrated by its recent showcase of the OTEC Power Module at a Petrobras geothermal workshop.

Advancing Floating OTEC Technology for Sustainable Power

At the core of this initiative is PLOTEC, Global OTEC’s storm-resistant floating platform designed for efficient ocean thermal energy production. The OTEC Power Module enhances the feasibility of offshore renewable energy, offering a reliable 24/7 sustainable power solution.

COPPE/UFRJ’s Waves and Currents Laboratory, recognized for its expertise in sustainable engineering research, will provide an advanced testing ground for optimizing this technology. The collaboration enables both organizations to address key challenges in OTEC plant deployment, ensuring scalability and efficiency for Brazil’s renewable energy sector.

Strengthening Brazil’s Leadership in Renewable Energy Innovation

With nearly six decades of cutting-edge research, COPPE/UFRJ brings unparalleled experience to the development of clean energy infrastructure. This partnership not only fosters academic-industry collaboration but also positions Brazil as a frontrunner in tropical ocean energy solutions.

By leveraging the ocean thermal gradient, floating OTEC technology can deliver sustainable power generation for coastal and island communities, reinforcing Brazil’s commitment to renewable energy innovation. As marine renewable energy gains momentum, this partnership paves the way for a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
