The New York Times reports that General Electric will stop making and selling compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in the United States at the end of the year. The story traces the rise of LEDs, which have consistently shrunk in price.
The story quotes a GE executive said that LEDs represented about 5 percent of the U.S. market in 2014. That percentage, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, rose to 15 percent during the third quarter of 2015. CFLs represent about 27 percent of the market, with a falling share, the story says.
