General Electric energy manageGeneral Electric and Coachella Energy Storage Partners will build a $38 million battery for the Imperial Irrigation District in California. The 30-megawatt power source will be one of the largest lithium-ion batteries in the state, according to The Desert Sun.

The project’s genesis was a blackout in September, 2011, which impacted 2.7 million people and left the eastern Coachella Valley without power – on a day in which temperatures reached 114 degrees.

Lithium-ion batteries are a useful backup power source. Last month, JuiceBox Energy unveiled a storage system that included an 8. kWh lithium-ion battery and a related system controller that enables peak shifting and back-up power.
