Garden City, KS, is using funds left over from an energy efficiency program to upgrade HVAC in a low-income housing facility.
The report in the Garden City Telegram said that as many as 60 units will be purchased for one of the two publicly owned facilities in the city. The cost, according to the story, will not exceed $310,000. The fund from which the money was left over from a contract with Siemens to retrofit streetlights with LEDs; add lighting to a local trail; weatherize city buildings, the zoo, the airport and recreational facilities and install programmable thermostats and lights in city buildings, the story says.
Improving the energy efficiency of affordable housing in many cases is the most practical way to increase profits because rents are dependent on the income of residents.
