From the Editor: How is a Salute Like a Good Sustainability Idea?

Posted

Reflections from Jen

My high-school age daughter told me she was at a party recently and in a moment of quirkiness, she saluted a friend rather than waving or saying hello. By the end of the night, half the kids there had adopted the salute, and by the end of the next week, it had apparently become the new greeting in the hallways at school: nobody says hi anymore, she told me, they just give a jaunty, two-fingered salute.

That story got me thinking (perhaps strangely) about how exciting our industry is. Good ideas spread like Lizzie’s salute so that one successful sustainability or energy management project spawns another and another. Every day, more companies ramp up their efforts to improve corporate responsibility, and sustainability continues to advance and evolve.

The best part of the contagious aspect of sustainability and energy management is that, when those of us in the field get together, we can actually see how good ideas spread. We share successes, explore how to solve challenges, and inspire each other - which is why I’m so much looking forward to ELEMCON in May.

This week, registrations for ELEMCON came in at a crazy rate, and we had a great time seeing so many familiar names alongside the names of new attendees that we can’t wait to meet. At the end of our weekly conference call about the conference (would that be a conference call?), our president, Paul Nastu, said enthusiastically, “This is fun.” We all agreed!

I look forward to seeing you in Denver, May 13-15. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do that here. Please note that the Marriott’s special room rates for ELEMCON attendees end on Friday, April 26th (you can register for rooms here).

Give me a call or shoot me an email if you have questions about ELEMCON, and have a great weekend.
