city-flats-hotel2City Flats, a hotel in Holland, Mich., is the first hotel in the Midwest to be constructed to LEED Gold certification standards, according to the hotel's Web site.

City Flats uses 30 percent less water than the baseline for similar hotels, and it uses energy optimization techniques.

Within the hotel, the seating and decor was made from rapidly renewable resources like cotton and bamboo. City Flats says that 30 percent of the materials that went into the hotel were sustainable, and that most of the elements were shipped to Holland and made locally.

Consumers increasingly have more tools to learn about sustainable and green choices in hotels. For instance, Travelocity has a green directory.

A survey by Ernst & Young found that the hospitality industry is using numerous methods to make operations more sustainable.
