Fiat Cleanest Automaker Within Europe in 2008, Lowest Average Fleet Emissions

fiat1In 2008, Fiat has the lowest average fleet CO2 emissions of any automaker that sold cars in Europe, according to a study by consulting firm JATO, MotorTrend Magazine reports.

Fiat's fleet averaged 0.475 pounds of CO2 emission per mile, compared with Peugeot and Citroen, which averaged 0.489 pounds of CO2 emission per mile and 0.505 pounds of CO2 emission per mile respectively.

Only Fiat and Peugeot met the European automakers associate's voluntary goal of cutting emissions to an average of 0.496 pounds of CO2 emissions per mile in 2008. Most automakers have fallen behind on EU's proposed target of curbing average CO2 emissions from new car to 130 grams per kilometer by 2012.

In 2008, the industry averaged 0.546 pounds of CO2 emission per mile, dropping 0.019 pounds of CO2 emission per mile from 2007.

Last October, Fiat said driver feedback can help cut CO2 emissions by up to 15 percent.
