FedEx Unveils Largest Rooftop Solar Array In U.S.

FedEx has unveiled the largest rooftop solar installation in the country, a 2.42 megawatt solar installation across 3.3 acres of rooftop space at the FedEx Ground Woodbridge distribution hub in New Jersey. The installation will satisfy about 30% of the facilities energy needs.

The solar power system, installed by BP Solar, was announced last year.

The unveiling follows on the heels of an announcement earlier this week that Cowley Companies is building a 2.4 megawatt solar array on a warehouse in Arizona.

Among FedEx’s other solar systems, in 2008 the freight division installed two solar power projects. One in Whittier, Calif., is a 282-kilowatt system , while another in Fontana, Calif., is a 269-kilowatt system.

In 2005, FedEx Express started a 904-kilowatt system at its Oakland, Calif., hub. The system meets up to 80 percent of that facility’s peak energy demand.
