FedEx Office - formerly known as Kinko's - has decided to streamline its printing and copying infrastructure in an effort to gain economies of scale, as well as energy efficiency.
By going with Canon's imageRUNNER ADVANCE and imagePRESS devices, FedEx Office expects to get about 30 percent improved energy efficiency over previous models, said spokeswoman Jenny Robertson.
The devices are designed with the complete product lifecycle in mind to minimize their impact on the environment and ensure resource utilization, she said.
Combined with the use of new HP Designjet large format printers, FedEx will be putting in place a total of 12,000 devices, according to a press release.
FedEx Office said it would be deploying the new machines across its 1,800 stores, but FedEx Office can't provide specifics about the program's effect on kilowatt hours used and utility bill savings because those numbers vary so widely by location and the types of print jobs they handle, Robertson said.
Many of the models are Energy Star rated.
FedEx Office also will be offering "cloud printing," or the ability to store documents in a virtual space that can be accessed via any connected network.
FedEx Office, along with Office Depot, earned top grades in the latest Green Grades office supply report card that ranks retailers and wholesalers/distributors on their paper practices.
