FedEx and BP Solar announced the completion and activation of a 269 kilowatt rooftop solar array for a FedEx Freight distribution center in Fontana, California.
Almost 1,400 solar modules cover more than 20,000 square feet on the Fontana facility's roof and can generate about 370,000 kilowatt hours, or approximately 54 percent of the facility's needs.
This is the second solar power project the two companies have worked together on. The first joint system is at FedEx Freight's facility in Whittier, Calif.
The 282 kilowatt system in Whittier is capable of producing more than 414,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, providing almost 40 percent of the facility's annual energy needs.
Combined, the two projects are expected to eliminate the release of more than 610 metric tons of GHG emissions.
FedEx will also be adding solar to its Cologne, Germany hub when it opens in 2010.
