FedEx avoided nearly 1.3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions between 2013 and 2014 as a combined result of its various energy-savings initiatives, according to the company’s 2014 Global Citizenship Report.
In 2014, year-over year aircraft emissions dropped 1.5 percent, bringing the company’s total reduction in CO2 emissions intensity to 21.4 percent from 2005 levels. The company had achieved a 4 percent CO2 intensity drop from 2011 to 2012.
As a result of its Fuel Sense and aircraft modernization programs, FedEx saved 100 million gallons of jet fuel at FedEx Express in 2014 against a 2005 baseline. The savings in jet fuel enabled the company to avoid more than 976,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. Since 2007, Fuel Sense initiatives have collectively saved the company more than 330 million gallons of jet fuel.
By 2020, the company plans to reduce aircraft emissions intensity by 30 percent against its 2005 baseline and increase fuel efficiency by 30 percent.
FedEx Express improved its vehicle fuel efficiency by an additional 2.5 percent in 2014, bringing the cumulative improvement to 29.5 percent from a 2005 baseline. Having nearly achieved its goal of 30 percent by 2020, the company expects to surpass and then revisit that goal in 2015.
FedEx opened two new facilities that generate on-site solar energy, bringing the cumulative total to 11. Together, these solar facilities produced more than 8 million kWh of electricity, avoiding 3,145 metric tons of carbon emissions. In 2014, FedEx was recognized as one of the top 25 solar-generating companies in the US.
In 2014, FedEx Ground implemented water-saving technologies and techniques at its Pittsburgh headquarters, which reduced water use by 2.4 million gallons annually.
The company aims to recycle, repurpose or reuse as much waste as possible. In 2014, 69 percent of solid waste was sent to recyclers, 59 percent of hazardous waste, 64 percent of non-hazardous waste, 98 percent of universal waste and 100 percent of e-waste.
FedEx Express received the 2014 EPA SmartWay Excellence Award in the large package carrier fleet, which recognizes significant strides toward a sustainable transportation future.
