Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is adopting a green technology infrastructure and IT strategy, with the aim of conserving energy, reducing the company's overall carbon footprint, limiting waste and purchasing responsibly.
Going forward, Fairmont said it will use a "green procurement policy" to ensure it is using IT equipment that is EPA Energy Star or Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) rated, according to a press release. Additionally, the level to which an IT item addresses Extended Product Responsibility (EPR) programs will be taken into consideration.
In addition to procurement, Fairmont's green IT strategy involves adjusting power settings on all workstations and laptops to automatically power down after an hour of inactivity. Fairmont expects this act alone to save it nearly 2.7 million kilowatt hours annually.
Fairmont's green IT program will be rolled out the rest of this year, with full implementation on tap for the end of the year.
In the rest of Fairmont's hotel operations, the chain's Green Partnership program provides guidance on best practices for sustainability and the environment. Fairmont, which is a member of the World Wildlife Federation's Climate Savers program, earlier this year finalized a Green Procurement Policy, as well as a Supplier Code of Conduct
