Facebook is building a new $1 billion data center, this one in Fort Worth, Texas, that will be powered entirely by wind energy. This fifth Facebook data center joins existing data centers in Altoona, Iowa; Prineville, Oregon; Forest City, North Carolina; and Lulea, Sweden.
And like its immediate predecessor in Altoona, Fort Worth will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, thanks to the 200 MW of new wind energy Facebook helped bring to the Texas grid as part of this deal.
Facebook worked with Citigroup Energy, Alterra Power and Starwood Energy Group on the wind project, which is projected to deliver electricity by 2016, reports Fortune. The wind farm is about 90 miles away from the data center.
Facebook openly shares its designs for its data centers through the Open Compute Project, which now has more than 200 members and thousands of participants, all collaborating on the development of efficient and sustainable data center technologies.
