Companies that make jars for jelly, as well as frozen french fry makers, are among the types of firms the Environmental Protection Agency targeted in its newest extension of the Energy Star rating.
EPA has issued Energy Performance Indicators (EPIs) for flat and container glass manufacturers, as well as juice and frozen fried potato processing plants, according to a press release.
EPA estimates that up to $900 million in energy costs could be saved annually if all such manufacturing facilities were to achieve Energy Star status.
For instance, the U.S. food processing sector spends almost $7 billion a year on energy, while the glass industry spends more than $2 billion a year on energy.

Companies such as ConAgra, Simplot, Del Monte Foods, Campbell Soup, General Mills, Heinz, Kellogg and Kraft, among others, have received Energy Star status for other kinds of food processing facilities.
