General Motors announced today that 16 of its facilities have been recognized by Energy Star. Two of the facilities – Bedford Casting in Indiana and the plant in Grand Rapids, MI – were recognized for the first time. The Bradford operation reduced energy intensity by 12 percent and the Grand Rapids plant replaced 11,000 lights with LEDs.
GM said in the press release that it is on schedule to cut its energy bill by $73 million this year, according to the company. The reduction is part of the company’s plan to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.
Plants and facilities elsewhere in Michigan and Indiana were named as well. Facilities in Ohio, New York and Missouri were named. Overseas plants – in China and India – also were recognized.
The announcement of General Motors’ 100 percent renewable goal was made last month. It covers all of its 350 worldwide operations by 2050. The company said that it also is joining RE100, which is a global collaborative of businesses committed to 100 percent renewable electric power.
