Micandy Gardens, a greenhouse operation in Hudsonville, MI, has taken significant steps to become energy efficient, according to Greenhouse Grower.
The story says that Micandy uses three-phase variable speed pumps for its well water and the company is using double poly – with air filtration between layers – instead of glass houses. Micandy also only irrigates where the crops are, uses fertilizer tanks with secondary containment to manage runoff, recycles plastic and cardboard and encourages composting.
In a move that is not greenhouse-specific, Micandy is transitioning from incandescent to LED lighting. That change, the story says, has reduced the amount of wiring needed to cover the entire area of the greenhouse.
Farms are very different than residential, commercial and industrial structures in their energy efficiency needs.
