Shipments are being received at EMCO’s Noblesville, Indiana site and include batteries sourced from both domestic and international suppliers. According to the company, the materials span multiple lithium-ion chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel- and cobalt-bearing systems, reflecting the growing diversity of batteries entering end-of-life across EVs, energy storage systems, consumer electronics, and manufacturing scrap streams.
EMCO’s role in the process centers on aggregation, conditioning, and preprocessing rather than final refining. The company uses proprietary conditioning methods to prepare recovered battery materials for downstream refinement, focusing on elements such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt. Those conditioned materials are then supplied to ReElement Technologies Corporation, which converts them into high-purity products suitable for reuse in manufacturing.
Together, the two operations form a domestic recycling-to-refining pathway designed to reduce reliance on foreign-controlled processing capacity. While the announcement emphasizes scale-up potential, the current development reflects early-stage operational throughput rather than a major capacity expansion.
The timing aligns with a broader increase in battery volumes reaching end-of-life, particularly as early electric vehicle deployments and stationary storage systems begin cycling out of service. Industry-wide, this phase has raised questions around collection logistics, chemistry variability, regulatory compliance, and the availability of domestic preprocessing infrastructure.
EMCO has indicated that it plans to expand its aggregation footprint and partner network throughout 2026 as volumes grow. For now, the start of shipments signals that battery recycling infrastructure is beginning to move from pilot-scale activity toward routine operations—an incremental but necessary step in building a domestic circular supply chain for critical battery materials.
