The race for the biggest, best and greenest data center is on, with EMC, Cisco, MIT and the University of Massachussetts potentially partnering on a new $100 million data center in Holyoke, Mass., reports the Republican.
The news closely follows the announcement by IBM and Syracuse University to build a green data center that uses 50 percent less energy.
The Holyoke data center should provide the infrastructur to host high-tech industries in the area, a former milling town. The city has access to abundant hydroelectric power.
The goal is to lure companies like Google or Microsoft to invest in the area, reports Xconomy.
The parties have entered into a 120-day phase to test the feasibility of the project before proceeding.
