According to an Ecova survey of nearly 200 multi-site companies across multiple industries, 82 percent have energy management systems (EMS) installed at some or all of their facilities, while 68 percent have systems installed at over half of their facilities, which is a substantial increase from 45 percent in 2013.
Ecova’s report “EMS Survey Analysis, Findings from Industry Professionals,” found that 24 percent of companies with EMS said their top criteria for selecting an EMS was integration with current assets, technology and infrastructure. Cost is also an important criterion, but companies indicated greater concern regarding EMS integration with existing systems.
Similar to Ecova’s 2013 survey, the top EMS brands are Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Trane and Siemens/Site Controls.
Ninety percent of companies see value in trend or telemetry data, from identifying troubled assets to benchmarking energy savings. Respondents cited wide-ranging value in the analysis of telemetry data from their EMS. The leading responses included the site-level operational value of set point standardization, the benefits of participation in demand response programs, back-office budgeting and financial management advantages, baseline measurement to drive efficiency gains and identify savings opportunities, and overall support of corporate sustainability initiatives.
Fifty-six percent of companies – an increase of six percent from 2013 – are also collecting and analyzing 15-minute interval data.
