Duke Energy is managing over a million individual chemical records and 600 waste profiles with its Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) system, which has replaced over 60 legacy systems.
Duke’s installation of IHS Essential Suite has created an integrated platform that helps it perform 250 hourly checks for potential compliance deviations, each with automatic notifications. Using the suite, the company has processed over 35,000 tasks for 32 task groups at over 800 production units.
The results won Duke recognition as “Best of the Best” among winners at the IHS Spectrum Excellence Awards for 2011, which recognizes outstanding use of advanced information technology to achieve environmental, health, safety compliance and sustainability (EHS&S) business goals. The winning organizations were celebrated at a gala awards banquet at IHS Spectrum 2011, the EHS&S software user conference, in Austin, Texas.
Duke Energy is poised to become the largest utility in the United States pending approval of its proposed merger with Progress Energy. Its installation of the IHS Essential Suite includes Essential Incident, Essential Compliance Manager, Essential Task Manager, Essential Air, Essential Water, Essential Waste, Essential Chemical Inventory, Essential MSDS Manager and Essential Audit.
The company has replaced four Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) systems with the integrated IHS platform that is handling over 35,000 sheets and 50,000 materials.
A total of 14 organizations received IHS Spectrum Excellence Awards in 2011. In addition to Duke Energy, three other companies from around the world were spotlighted as “Best-of-the-Best” finalists: Indian paint producer Asian Paints Ltd, food safety and santization company Ecolab, and Husky Energy, one of Canada’s largest integrated energy companies.
The 2011 IHS Spectrum Excellence Award winners (and a sampling of their achievements) include:
Asian Paints – India's largest paint producer replaced hundreds of standalone/manual systems with a centralized EHS&S platform – automating tens of thousands of environmental audit processes, saving significant man-hours each month on safety management, and supporting a 54% reduction in water use.
