Duke Realty Corp. increased capacity of the cooling infrastructure supporting a 19-story office building it owns by upgrading three 360-ton chillers. The project was undertaken because the three units were operating at full speed and wasting energy due to the use of variable-discharge vane throttling, according to a case study at Consulting-Specifying Engineer Magazine
The solution was to upgrade the motor control from constant to variable speed and installing a variable frequency drive and chiller automation.
Earlier this month, Trane presented the AquaTrine, an air-cooled demonstration chiller with next generation, low-global warming potential (GWP) DR-55 refrigerant. The unit is designed for apartments, office buildings, small restaurants, retail stores and hotels.
