Dow Chemical has used a variety of efforts to save a billion gallons of water at its Freeport, Texas, site.
The company is saving about $4 million a year in reduced energy, maintenance and water costs, as well as reduced emissions, according to a press release.
Dow is using a Six Sigma-influenced effort to classify 80 cooling tower systems in a way that optimizes operations.
The resulting water savings are equal to the amount of water used by 40,000 people a year.
Dow is working with Nalco on the technology, dubbed 3D TRASAR Technology for Cooling Water.
Nalco is installing the process at other similar sites worldwide. So far, the company has installed about 10,000 units worldwide, helping save an estimated 75 billion gallons of water.
Other companies are turning to cooling towers to save energy and water, such as the Rariton Bay Medical Center.
