The Advanced Manufacturing Office intends to issue a new funding opportunity for work to develop Next Generation Electric Machines (NGEM). The goal is development of NGEMs of high power density, high revolutions per minute motors and integrated power electronics.
Specifically, the upcoming funding opportunity will facilitate efforts to integrate Medium Voltage class wide-bandgap (WBG) devices with Mega Watt range high-speed motors and demonstrate significant reductions in the volume and weight of the integrated system. WBG devices offer higher switching frequencies and junction temperatures, as well as inherent higher voltage capabilities. The purpose of the funding is to demonstrate integrated motor/WBG devices and to reduce issues relating to their reliability, thereby accelerating the deployment and adoption of this integrated technology.
The opportunity will include from $10-12 million in DOE funding for multiple projects in the form of cooperative agreements. The period of performance for each award will be from 2-3 years.
