d.light Reaches 200M, Expands Solar Access Globally

Affordable solar products light up lives across Africa, India, and beyond

Off-grid solar company d.light has announced it has now positively impacted over 200 million people globally, marking a significant step toward its goal of transforming one billion lives. Founded at Stanford in 2007 and headquartered in San Francisco, d.light has focused on providing affordable energy solutions across Africa and India, where access to reliable electricity remains limited.

The company’s products now reach more than 32 million homes, with a particularly strong focus on supporting children’s education — over 90 million school-aged kids have benefited from improved lighting and connectivity. Originally known for its solar lamps, d.light has expanded into a broader portfolio that includes TVs, smartphones, and clean cookstoves, reflecting a shift from single-product solutions to comprehensive energy and appliance access.

To celebrate its milestone, d.light is donating solar kits to 200 health clinics in Africa, reinforcing its commitment to community well-being and essential services.

Financing Innovation Fuels Growth Across Emerging Markets

A major driver behind d.light’s expansion is its innovative financial model. The company’s ‘Brighter Life by d.light (BLd)’ Receivables Financing Facility has unlocked over $300 million in receivables purchasing power, contributing to a total of $842 million across multiple facilities since 2020.

This approach allows d.light to serve households earning less than $5 per day, breaking down cost barriers through pay-as-you-go financing. The model also supports last-mile distribution, making it easier for rural and low-income families to access reliable, clean energy solutions without upfront costs.

By leveraging receivables financing, d.light maintains operational flexibility and can scale rapidly while investing in product quality and local support networks. This financing framework has also become a reference point for other distributed energy providers, signaling a shift in how energy access projects are funded and scaled in emerging markets.

Beyond financing, d.light’s mission has remained central to its strategy. Co-founder Sam Goldman was motivated to create safer lighting options after a neighbor in Benin was injured in a kerosene fire. This incident became the catalyst for replacing dangerous, polluting fuels with solar-powered alternatives — a focus that continues to shape d.light’s social impact initiatives today.

CEO Nedjip Tozun emphasizes that the company's mission goes beyond metrics: “This milestone is more than a number—it represents brighter homes, more children studying at night, families connected to information, and communities empowered through clean, reliable energy. We are honored to serve the millions of people who have put their trust in us and are inspired to continue innovating for the next 200 million.”
