GE Japan is participating in the “Future Disaster-Proof Factory Plan,” a disaster preparedness project being undertaken by Sekisui House’s Tohoku Factory. The Sekisui House facility is designed to be eco-friendly during normal times, durable during disasters and safe and secure for local communities and companies.
To achieve cuts in peak electricity usage during normal periods and secure energy when disasters occur, GE Japan installed its large-scale energy storage system, a gas engine for cogeneration and LED lighting equipment at the facility.
This is the first facility in Japan to integrate three kinds of energy systems. In addition to the energy storage system and gas engine, the facility had already installed a 720 kW solar power generator.
The Sekisui House system is capable of providing electricity for as many as 250 people for seven days.
The 2 MWh/500 kW storage system is modular, has a long battery life, requires minimal maintenance and does not require external cooling or heating facilities. The 225-KW cogeneration gas engine achieved thermal efficiency between 75 percent and 80 percent and simultaneously produces electricity and warm water. The LED lighting equipment conserves 70 percent of the factory’s energy.
In addition to the office, cafeteria and guestrooms, GE also installed solar LED street lights throughout the factory grounds.
