Dewar Distillery Slashes Carbon Footprint 90%

Dewar distilleryDewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery in the Scottish Highlands has cut its carbon footprint by 90 percent after installing a biomass boiler in late 2014.

Iain Lochhead, operations director at John Dewar & Sons, part of the Bacardi group of companies, says the Scotch whisky distillery explored several options for reducing its fossil fuel usage before settling on a biomass boiler. He estimates the boiler, which uses wood pellets, will reduce the distillery’s carbon emissions from fossil fuel sources by up to 6,000 tons per year.

John Dewar & Sons at its five malt distilleries has achieved:

  • 34 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2006
  • 46 percent reduction in water use since 2009
  • 30 percent reduction of waste to landfill since 2010

These conservation efforts are part of Bacardi’s global Good Spirited sustainability initiative.
