Dell Technologies plans to incorporate smart building technology to its campus in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The project in partnership with real-time facility data monitoring solution and service provider FacilityConneX is expected to help the corporation save energy and sustain operational efficiency.

The project provides real-time monitoring, fault detection and diagnostics, and ongoing monitoring-based commissioning for Dell’s 313,679-square-foot building and its 600-plus assets, including chillers, boilers, and HVAC equipment, FacilityConneX says. Smart building monitoring incorporates Dell’s IoT Edge Gateway technologies with FacilityConneX’s Intelligent Building Solution powered by GE Digital’s Predix portfolio.

Under the partnership, FacilityConneX will take the lead in reporting measurements, verifying energy reduction, and identifying energy conservation measures to Eversource, the local utility. Dell Technologies also plans to work with Eversource on evaluating energy conservation findings to identify additional incentives.

Paul Fitzgerald, vice president of facilities management at Dell, told Energy Manager Today that real-time monitoring offers several benefits. “Big data grants facilities with the information they need that, when coupled with intelligent monitoring platforms which provide transparency and actionable feedback, enables facility operators to perform more efficiently and cost effective,” he said.

Facilities like Dell’s campus in Hopkinton use this data to establish monitoring-based commissioning and take a more proactive approach, Fitzgerald explained.

“The FacilityConneX platform interprets all of the data and can then determine both critical issues that need to be addressed immediately, as well as potential issues that can be mitigated with proactive action,” he said. “Simultaneously, the real-time data monitoring platform is able to provide an overview across multiple systems, delivering real time alerts for assets, HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, and more — all consolidated into one smart platform.”

Smart building solutions drive equipment optimization and enable a more informed and efficient approach to facility management, FacilityConneX says. The company added that these solutions could save customers upwards of 25% on HVAC energy while increasing equipment longevity through predictive maintenance.

“Real-time data monitoring technologies have become a necessity instead of a luxury as the burgeoning Internet of Things continues to carve a prominent role in the manufacturing and commercial sectors,” Fitzgerald said.
