Approximately 30 percent of buildings in Washington, D.C. that have to follow the city's energy and water benchmarking requirements did not file the necessary paperwork by the deadline, according to The Washington Business Journal.
The D.C. Department of Energy and the Environment issued 450 notices of violation to property owners on August 28. The benchmarking paperwork was due on April 1. Failure to comply within 30 days will result in subsequent $100 per day fines.
The benchmarking requirements are in place for about 1,546 commercial properties -- including multifamily homes -- that are larger than 50,000 square feet.
In July, the District of Columbia singed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Iberdrola Renewables. It will supply 35 percent of the government’s electricity via wind power. The deal calls for the Department of General Services to purchase the entire output of Iberdrola’s South Chestnut wind farm. The 46 MW facility is in southwestern Pennsylvania.
