The U.S. Department of Energy awarded its Superior Energy Performance Platinum (SEP) certification to Daimler’s Detroit Diesel Corp.
The story says that the facility used the ISO 50001 standard to save $37 million over 10 years. This savings was accomplished as as production increased 93 percent. The facility’s cumulative energy performance increased 32 percent and release of 442,380 tons of carbon dioxide emissions was avoided. The firm used the ISO 14001 management system as deployed by Six Sigma-trained specialists. Steps that made the increased efficiency possible included an internal Web-based database and augmented eLearning, according to the story. The gains were verified by a third party.
Earlier this month, 11 General Motors plants were awarded Energy Star certification by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
