MercedesDaimler says it will offset expensive emissions-reducing technology with material cost savings, Reuters reports.

“Already in 2014, we could offset the burdens in variable cost for all these CO2-related measures with material cost efficiencies,” chief financial officer Bodo Uebber said. “I think it will be the same in ’15 and ’16 and ’17.”

The high cost of fuel-efficiency technology continues to challenge automakers, especially as falling gasoline priced encourage consumers to buy less fuel-efficient cars.

Daimler ranks no. 10 among companies with the best corporate social responsibility reputation, according to Reputation Institute’s most recent annual CSR RepTrak.
