GE announced its zero-liquid discharge wastewater treatment technology will be installed at two new 758 MW natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle power plants in Texas. The two power plants, which are owned by Panda Power Funds, will reduce incoming water needs by recycling and reusing more than 98 percent of their own cooling tower wastewater. When complete, each power plant will provide electricity for about 750,000 homes.
The EPA awarded a contract to Bowling Green, Ohio-based Blue Water Satellite to provide historical data on concentrations of potentially harmful elements at four Great Lakes beaches. Blue Water Satellite will use its technology to identify and quantify the concentration levels of cyanobacteria (often called harmful algal blooms), phosphorus and chlorophyll-a in water bodies. The company's proprietary technology has the ability to retrieve and analyze data back to 1984.
The Port of Seattle has awarded a $10.5 million contract to Imco General Construction for cleanup along the waterfront in the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site. Imco will remove contaminated upland soil and river sediment beginning in May. The job, which will include demolition, excavation, dredging, disposal, and upland and dredge backfilling, is due to be completed by Feb. 15, 2014.
Environmental Management Planning Services, based in San Francisco, has been awarded a contract from the Bureau of Reclamation to provide support services with the preparation of the environmental impact statement for the proposed Pojoaque Basin Regional Water System in New Mexico. Under the contract, which is valued at $4.28 million, EMPS will assess environmental impacts of proposed water infrastructure projects, such as the development of diversion, transmissions, storage, treatment and distribution facilities.
AECOM Technology Corp. has been awarded a contract from Perini Management Services, a US Agency for International Development contractor, to provide services related to USAID's irrigation and watershed management program in Afghanistan. Under the five-year $44 million contract, AECOM will support civil engineering and other services related to Afghanistan's agricultural, irrigation and livestock management sectors.
