The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has stepped up its “e-waste” program by joining the Northeast States Electronics Challenge, EastonCourier.com reports.
The DEP is moving to finalize details of a statewide “e-waste” program that will lead to a system of free municipal collection points for unwanted computers, monitors and televisions by July.
The Northeast States Electronics Challenge is managed by the Northeast Recycling Council Inc., with funding from the EPA. It is a voluntary program that encourages governments to take a leadership role in managing computers in an environmentally sound manner.
The state of Oregon is requiring electronics manufacturers to either set up their own recycling program or pay their portion of a state-run program to recycle computers, monitors, and TVs.
Companies such as Best Buy, Dell, Lenovo, National Instruments, Office Depot, Sharp and Toshiba are offering e-waste recycling programs.
