Indiana Energy ManageThe Century Center Convention Center in South Bend, IN, has embarked on an energy efficiency project that will save 85,000 annually in costs during the next 15 years, according to WNDU.  The total savings over the period will be about $1.5 million. Steps include installation of solar panels, LEDs and room sensors that will turn air conditioners, heating and lights on and off contingent on occupancy.

In addition to the savings, the project will earn rebates from Indiana Michigan Power.

Convention centers and arenas offer great opportunities for energy savings. Oregon’s Salem Convention Center, for instance, has implemented a food composting and recycling initiative through the Marion County EarthWISE program. Items such as bottle caps, straws, Styrofoam and film in addition to traditionally recycled products are collected, according to the Statesman Journal.
