catholic healthAbout 10 percent of the electricity used at facilities operated by Catholic Health in New York will be derived from wind energy.

Under a new two-year contract with Constellation Energy, Catholic Health hopes to save $500,000 a year in electricity costs, reports North American Wind Power.

The following Catholic Health facilities will benefit from the agreement:

  • Mercy Hospital of Buffalo
  • Kenmore Mercy Hospital
  • Sisters of Charity Hospital
  • Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus
  • four Catholic Health nursing and adult homes
  • Catholic Health's Nazareth Campus.

In all, the facilities use in excess of 58 million kWh of electricity annually.

Other hospitals are tapping into renewable energy.

For instance, a heat and power project that takes methane gas created at a brewery and converts it into clean energy to run a nearby hospital just entered production.

The project takes methane from City Brewery in LaCrosse, Wisc., and converts it into clean energy to run Gundersen Lutheran hospital. Gundersen Lutheran has undertaken a number of initiatives to reduce energy, as well as to add renewable energy. Its goal is to eventually be 100 percent reliant on renewable energy.
