The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is showcasing the innovative ways three major companies are reducing their fleet carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. EDF says the best practices at Carrier, Novo Nordisk and Poland Spring can be adopted by all businesses across the nation to help reduce the more than 15 metric tons of CO2 emitted annually per vehicle with more than 3 million vehicles in corporate fleets.
Here are the highlights:
-- Carrier, a global manufacturer of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems, has reduced its fleet emissions by 30 percent through a variety of strategies that include gathering data from telematics equipment and reducing vehicle weights. The company is also saving $1 million each year in fuel costs.
-- Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company, has cut its CO2 emissions by 24 percent during the first six months of 2009 by offering incentives for fuel-smart choices and training drivers to operate more efficiently. The company reduced CO2 emissions by 9 percent in 2008.
-- Poland Spring is reducing its truck fleet emissions through several measures. In addition to using non-food based biofuels, the water bottler has reduced top speeds by two miles per hour and reduced idling time by 70 percent from 2007 to 2009. The company said it is reducing its carbon footprint by 77 tons annually.
