Jet Republic, a European private business jet airline, is offsetting the carbon emissions from 25 new Learjet 60 XR business jets.
The offsets come through a turnkey program in which Learjet customers can opt to have their emissions offset.
Offsetting is achieved through the purchase, based on a fee per flight hour, of Verified Emission Reduction credits through ClimateCare, a division of JP Morgan.
Eventually, Jet Republic plans to have up to 110 Learjets enrolled in the program. Jet Republic will take possession of the first 25 jets ordered in October. In total, it has ordered 110.
Jet Republic, described as an "inclusive private jet club," flies to over 1,000 airports in Europe and more around the world, according to a press release.
Learjet is a subsidiary of Bombardier. Bombardier says it is working to ensure that its offset program meets the standards of the forthcoming European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) scheduled to take effect in January 2012.
In 2007, Bombardier formalized a corporate responsibility roadmap with the goal of reducing water, energy consumption, GHG emissions and hazardous wastes at its sites by 15 percent by the end of 2008. In the past three years, Bombardier’s Learjet facility has increased recycling by 22 percent and reduced water usage by almost 50 percent.
