emissions red buildingAlong with recent news of the U.S. setting a goal to cut carbon emissions 17 percent by 202o, other nations such as Canada, India and Japan have set their own targets.

At the Copenhagen climate summit, nations were asked to report by Jan. 31 to what level they intended to cut emissions.

Canada has aligned itself with the U.S. goal of 17 percent, reports AFP.

Canada's energy intensive oil-sands projects may pose a difficulty for the goal, observers say.

India has pledged to reduce its carbon intensity 20-25 percent by 2020, compared to 2005 levels, reports the Wall Street Journal. India said that this target was not legally binding, however.

Japan plans to cut its emissions 25 percent, when compared to 1990 levels, reports The Japan Times. That goal is contingent on other major emitting nations also committing to "ambitious targets."

The EU appears set to stick to its target of 20 percent cuts, reports the Wall Street Journal. The EU had considered upping its target to 30 percent if other industrialized nations committed to comparable cuts.
