Buildings in Massachusetts and New Jersey have been LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The Massachusetts winner is in Somerville. It has been awarded LEED Gold Core & Shell Development designation, according to The Somerville Patch.
The building was lauded for several design features. They include ethylene propylene diene monomer roofing that incorporates a heat island effect; an optimized exterior façade with increased insulation and high performance glazing; use of recycled materials; easy bicycle access and use of renewable energy.
The building is in the Assembly Row section of the city. That area has other LEED Gold recipients, including a Nike building that has received Platinum certification.
The Ehinger Center at Drew University in Madison, N.J. also achieved LEED certification. Features earning the award include a heating and cooling system that saves 20 percent in energy compared to the previous system; automated shades over a large window; an indoor composting station; pervious concrete pavers and waterless urinals in the men’s room, according to American School and University.
