The Intelligent Logistics for Innovative Product Technologies project concluded that it is possible to build cars to order within five days, cutting waste and emissions, Edie reports.
The project, involving 29 partners, found that this method of manufacturing would make large amounts of company's capital available for investing in green technology; force automakers to adapt quickly; and keep productions in Europe.
The key is pre-formed modules that can be put together as soon as an order is placed and assembling cars close to where they will be sold. Dr Glenn Parry, from the University of Bath's School of Management and a core team leader at the ILIPT project, told Edie that automakers will no longer have to ship large quantities of vehicles all over the world because in order to build a car in five days, "it has got to be local."
