The Army has had to cut about $250 million in energy efficiency projects in fiscal 2013 due to budget cuts, according to The Federal Times. Additionally, the Army also has had to slow down its replacement of coal-fired boilers. And the budget cuts have meant the Army is deferring maintenance on other equipment and facilities, which means they will become even less energy efficient.
Up to this point, the news from the US Army has all been positive in terms of energy efficiency and renewables.
In August, the Army awarded contracts to a group of 22 qualified solar technology contractors. Solar is the second of four technologies being awarded under a $7 billion Renewable and Alternative Energy Power Production for Department of Defense installations program. The first, geothermal, was awarded in May.
