The Marcus Garvey Apartments, an affordable-housing neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, has installed a microgrid that is expected to improve energy efficiency and cost, and to ensure a steady supply of energy. The project was developed by L+M Development Partners, writes Microgrid Knowledge.
Solar panels on 21 rooftops, making up a 480-kW array, are integrated with a 400-kW fuel cell and 300-kW lithium battery. It is the first lithium battery used under NYC’s new rules which, until now, had not allowed for lithium batteries because of fire concerns.
Demand Energy owns and will operate the microgrid, using control systems that will help the housing development guard against grid electricity pricing fluctuations.
