Brookfield Property Partners and Urban American is spending $16 million for energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits for 3,000 apartment units in Harlem, N.Y.
Crain’s New York Business says that the plan is to replace about 6,000 windows and seal cracks in five buildings. A cogeneration plant will provide about 15 percent of the heat and hot water for at least three of the buildings, according to the story. The buildings are spread across the community, which is in upper Manhattan. Annual savings are expected to be $4 million and carbon emissions will be reduced by as much as 29 percent.
The retrofit element of the project is expected to be finished mostly next year. It will cost $11 million, including new energy efficient appliances. The cogeneration system will cost an additional $5 million.
