Britain's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has launched its Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP). The plan is a series of green pledges from 300 stakeholders in the fashion industry to improve the sustainability performance of clothing, Recycling & Waste Management News & Information reports.
SCAP outlines ways to make fashion more sustainable throughout its lifecycle and urges consumers to do more to reuse their clothes.
Grocery giants such as Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury's have all signed up to a range of actions including increasing take-back and recovery of unwanted clothing.
Nike is expected to include recycled content in most of its product ranges by 2012 and reduce packaging in its shoe boxes, according to Annie Francis, Nike's corporate responsibility senior manager.
"Green" fashion is spreading to clothing at a fast clip. More than 20 major brands and 1,200 smaller ones sell organic fiber products and spending on eco-fashion has doubled in the last two years.
