Bowling Green University is using LEDs from Cree to replace metal halide lighting fixtures in its Perry Field House. The playing field, which measures 100 yards by 60 yards, now is lit by Cree CXB High-Bay LED luminaires. The changeover is saving the school, which is in Bowling Green, Ohio, more than $200,000 in energy and maintenance costs. The return on investment is two years.
The story says that the CXB Series provides quick one-to-one replacement of up to 400W HID fixtures at high lumens per dollar. They cut energy consumption by half and are lightweight. The Perry Field House installation doubled the foot candles of the area, come on instantly and reduce energy use.
Sports arenas use tremendous amounts of energy for lighting and other purposes, so it is important to keep tabs on them. Electric Choice took a look at major league baseball facilities and selected the ten most energy efficient. They are Safeco Field (Seattle Mariners); Target Field (Minnesota Twins); Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals); Nationals Park (Washington Nationals); Marlins Park (Miami Marlins); AT&T Park (San Francisco Giants); Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox); Citi Field (New York Mets); Progressive Field (Cleveland Indians) and Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers).
