BMW Group has partnered with Aeromine Technologies to test a novel wind energy system at its MINI manufacturing plant in Oxford, England. The collaboration marks the UK's first installation of a motionless wind energy system, showcasing BMW's commitment to sustainable innovation and Aeromine's cutting-edge technology in renewable energy solutions.
Aeromine Technologies' rooftop wind energy system is designed to convert a building's wind flow into renewable energy without visible moving parts. Unlike traditional wind turbines, Aeromine's bladeless design minimizes noise and vibrations, ensuring minimal disturbance to buildings and the surrounding environment.
The system features wing-like vertical airfoils that create a vacuum effect, drawing air behind an internal propeller to generate clean electricity frm its perch at the edge of a building's rooftop. This unique approach addresses common challenges associated with wind energy, such as noise and wildlife impact, while also complementing existing solar installations and maximizing the renewable energy output from rooftops.
The pioneering project is part of the BMW Startup Garage, a business unit dedicated to supporting early-stage startups working on cutting-edge technologies. By acting as a "venture client" rather than a traditional investor, BMW Group is taking a hands-on approach to testing and potentially implementing innovative solutions across its global facilities.
The installation at the Oxford plant will serve as a test for assessing the technology's potential to enhance energy efficiency across BMW Group sites worldwide. This approach aligns with BMW's ongoing commitment to sustainability initiatives such as the large-scale solar installation at the MINI Plant Oxford, which has been in place for a decade.
Aeromine's rooftop wind energy system in action:
Claus Lønborg, Chief Commercial Officer, Aeromine Technologies, said the partnership with BMW Group is an important step for Aeromine as they continue to innovate and expand the capabilities of renewable energy solutions.
"Our motionless wind energy technology is designed to work seamlessly alongside solar systems, maximizing the renewable energy output from rooftops while addressing challenges like noise, vibrations, and wildlife impact. We’re excited to see how this initial installation can lead to broader applications across BMW’s global facilities,” Lønborg stated.
