Best Buy, Johnson Controls, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Veolia have joined the U.S. Department of Energy's National Clean Fleets Partnership, a public-private partnership that aims to help the nation’s largest fleet operators to cut the amount of gasoline and diesel they use.
The new partners join 14 other major national companies - including AT&T, UPS and PepsiCo - in committing to such actions as improving their fuel economy and integrating alternative fuel vehicles into their fleets.
New member Best Buy has reduced carbon emissions from fuel use in its 5,000-vehicle fleet, which includes its mobile IT support service Geek Squad (pictured), by 21 percent since 2009. Best Buy is testing both electric and propane vehicles for future use, the Energy Department says.
Veolia Environmental Services operates four compressed natural gas fueling stations and more than 100 CNG refuse-collection and support vehicles, according to the department.
President Obama announced the creation of the National Clean Fleets Partnership last April. At that time it had five charter members. Further members were announced in July.
