and Berry GlobalMars are advancing circular economy efforts by transitioning M&M’S®, SKITTLES®, and STARBURST® pantry jars to 100% recycled plastic. This move eliminates over 1,300 metric tons of virgin plastic annually while keeping plastic waste in circulation.
Made from post-consumer resin (PCR) sourced from curbside plastic collection, the new jars reduce emissions and plastic waste. Consumers can further the cycle by recycling them, ensuring the material is reused. Berry Global’s expertise in food-grade mechanically recycled resin ensures the jars meet safety and quality standards.
Mars’ Sustainable Packaging Plan prioritizes recyclable, reusable, and compostable packaging. Since 2017, its partnership with Berry has focused on sustainable solutions, with this latest milestone demonstrating the impact of long-term collaboration. Incorporating recycled content reduces virgin plastic use and supports improvements in recycling infrastructure.
Berry Global sees this as a step toward scaling sustainable packaging solutions.
"The ability to deliver products made with recycled materials at scale is crucial," said Peter Goshorn, Vice President of Food, Beverage & Spirits at Berry Global.
As more companies adopt circular economy principles, this initiative highlights the viability of large-scale transitions to recycled content in reducing waste and driving sustainability.
