Beer Invention Saves 90% on Cooling

Heineken has invented a beer draught and cooling system – SmartDispense – that cuts a pub's average energy use by 90 percent, reports the Guardian.

Traditionally, beer is kept in a pub’s basement, where the temperature must be kept cool. With Heineken’s SmartDispense, the beer is cooled as it leaves the keg, eliminating the need to cool an entire storage area.

Heineken trialed the technology in 2012, and since its introduction in 2013, SmartDispense has been rolled out at over 700 locations across the UK.

Earlier this year, Heineken received the Top Product of the Year Award 2014 in the Environmental Leader Product & Project Award category for its David XL Green draught system, which stores and chills beer kegs in a fridge directly below the counter so the beer does not have to travel far to the tapping point, resulting in a 50 percent lower energy consumption versus conventional draught systems.

A spokeswoman for Heineken said, “The David Unit forms part of the SmartDispense family in the UK.”
