Banff Half Marathon and Karbon-X Advance Climate Goals

Posted

For the third consecutive year, the Banff Half Marathon has partnered with Karbon-X to take measurable climate action, reflecting both the local heritage of Banff and global sustainability goals. The 2025 race included verified climate contributions covering the event’s footprint, while runners added voluntary contributions during registration.

“Partnering with Karbon-X has given us a meaningful way to align our race with the values of the community,” said Paul Regensburg, Race Director of the Banff Half Marathon, in the September 10 press release. “Our runners care about protecting the places they love, and this partnership helps turn that care into action.”

Matt Kauffman, EVP of Sports & Entertainment at Karbon-X, added: “We’re proud to provide runners with a simple, effective way to balance their environmental impact. At its core, this partnership is about taking collective responsibility for our footprint, safeguarding the beauty of Banff, and advancing a shared vision for a sustainable future.”

Climate Contributions With Local Roots

Banff has long relied on natural resources, from hydro stations powering early mountain communities to campfires connecting people outdoors. By channeling event contributions toward clean energy and sustainable heat projects worldwide, the partnership mirrors Banff’s legacy of stewardship.

Broader Context: Sports and Sustainability

Sports organizations are increasingly embedding sustainability into events. Paris 2024 reported a 54.6% cut in emissions versus London 2012 and Rio 2016, while more than 270 sports organizations have joined the UN’s Sports for Climate Action Framework; UEFA also launched a carbon footprint calculator to standardize club reporting. Travel remains the largest source of event emissions. Such measures not only reduce climate impact but also engage participants in collective action.

The Banff Half Marathon’s collaboration with Karbon-X aligns with a growing trend: making sustainability an integrated part of fan and participant experience.  Karbon-X says it will remain the Banff Half Marathon’s Sustainability Partner through 2027, extending a collaboration that includes verified climate contributions and optional runner add-ons.
