“AV’s reinvestment in Maryland strengthens our state’s position as a global hub for aerospace and defense,” said Governor Wes Moore at the July 16 ribbon-cutting ceremony. “By expanding its footprint in Germantown, AV continues to drive innovation in cyber, aviation, and emerging tech—creating high-skilled jobs and keeping Maryland at the forefront of cutting-edge research and discovery.”
With this expansion, AeroVironment now employs 600 people across seven Maryland locations. The company, which specializes in autonomous systems, cyber and electronic technologies, space platforms, and energy systems, says the facility will accelerate development of mission-critical solutions like its PANTHER phased array antenna and ARGUS perimeter security system.
The new Germantown site brings to life key pillars of AeroVironment’s 2024 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, which outlines commitments to workforce development, environmental stewardship, and responsible innovation.
“This facility is more than a building—it is a hub for innovation, collaboration, and mission-driven work that will shape the future of defense technology,” said Deane Edelman, Vice President of Real Estate and Facility Operations at AeroVironment.
According to the CSR report, nearly 90% of the company’s product portfolio is battery-powered, reducing fossil fuel use in deployment and enabling longer-range operations. AeroVironment has also begun pursuing LEED certification at new facilities and is sourcing renewable electricity for more than 30% of its global operations.
The project was supported by a $1 million conditional loan from the Maryland Department of Commerce’s Advantage Maryland program, along with a $50,000 grant from the Partnership for Workforce Quality. Montgomery County contributed a $100,000 conditional grant through its Economic Development Fund.
“On behalf of the State of Maryland, we are proud to support AV’s expansion in Montgomery County,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Harry Coker, Jr. “This new facility’s impact on autonomous systems and cybersecurity services will keep our state competitive and thriving with cutting-edge technology.”
AeroVironment’s CSR strategy includes targeted workforce initiatives—338 new hires in FY24—and expanding supplier diversity. The company also engages in community partnerships through its IMPACT! program, donating more than $49,000 in FY24 to organizations supporting veterans and STEM education.
“That’s why we’re not only dedicated to the development of critical defense technologies, like autonomous systems, counter-drone systems, and space capabilities, but also to strengthening U.S. defense manufacturing capabilities,” said Trip Ferguson, President of AeroVironment’s Space, Cyber, and Directed Energy Segment. “This new state-of-the-art facility in Maryland is another capstone in AV’s nationwide manufacturing network and a testament to the strength of our nation’s Defense Industrial Base.”
With more than 3,700 employees across 30 U.S. locations, AeroVironment’s governance framework includes a dedicated ESG Committee, a cybersecurity oversight board, third-party supply chain audits, and a strong record of compliance in environmental and safety standards.
